Sustainability Starts With the Project Requirement

Sustainability requirements vary by brand, market and project. Material selection, finish specifications, expected display life, replaceable components and packing requirements can all influence the environmental considerations of a retail display.

There is no single universal solution. The most effective approach is to define requirements clearly at the start of a project -- before engineering, material selection and production planning begin.

If your project has any of the following requirements, please share them at the beginning:

  • FSC certification requirement for wood or paper components
  • Recycled-content targets for specific materials
  • Water-based or low-VOC finish requirements
  • Restricted or prohibited materials list
  • Packaging material or weight restrictions
  • Destination market compliance requirements
  • Brand sustainability guidelines or supplier code of conduct

Why Early Communication Matters

Sustainability decisions affect engineering choices, supplier selection, surface treatment options and production planning. Requirements introduced late in a project can result in redesign, extended lead times or additional cost. Defining them at the brief stage allows us to build them into the project from the start.

We Work to Your Specification

We do not assume a default sustainability position on behalf of our clients. We work to the specification provided. Where options exist, we will present them with relevant trade-offs in performance, cost and lead time.

02

Material Options

The following materials are available for projects with specific sustainability requirements. Availability depends on project specification, required finish, structural performance, supplier availability and certification requirements.

Note: Material availability and certification documentation should be confirmed at the project brief stage. Not all options are suitable for all applications.

FSC-Certified Wood

FSC-certified timber and engineered wood panels are available through qualified suppliers for projects requiring chain-of-custody documentation. Suitable for structural components, bases and display frames.

FSC CoC documentation available upon request

FSC-Certified Paper & Board

FSC-certified paper and paperboard for graphic panels, packaging components and paper-based display elements. Available for projects with FSC or recycled-content requirements.

Material Choice Is Only Part of the Picture

Production practices -- how a display is manufactured, finished and assembled -- also affect the overall environmental footprint of a project.

The following practices are implemented by selected manufacturing partners according to their production processes, facility requirements and applicable regulations. Where these are relevant to your project or supplier audit requirements, please let us know.

Transparency note: Production practices listed below reflect capabilities of our qualified manufacturing partners, not a single Samtop-owned facility. We will confirm specific practices applicable to your project upon request.

Surface Finishing Options

Water-based paint and low-VOC coating options are available for applicable surface treatments. Powder coating is used where suitable as an alternative to solvent-based liquid paint. Finish selection is made in consultation with the project specification and performance requirements.

Air Treatment & Dust Collection

Selected manufacturing partners operate dust collection and air treatment systems in woodworking, sanding and spray finishing areas in accordance with facility requirements and local environmental regulations.

Production Waste Management

Waste separation is practised at partner facilities. Scrap metal is collected for recycling. Wood offcuts and panel waste are managed according to facility waste programmes. Wastewater from surface treatment processes is treated prior to discharge where applicable.

Material Utilization & Cutting Optimization

CNC nesting and cutting optimization are used to reduce material waste in panel and sheet cutting. Efficient layout planning is part of the standard engineering and production preparation process.

Social Responsibility in Production

Samtop Display holds SA8000 certification covering labour standards, working conditions and social accountability. Selected manufacturing partners are assessed for compliance with relevant social responsibility standards and can be subject to SMETA or brand-specific factory audits upon request.

04

Designing Displays for Longer Use and Easier Updates

One of the most practical ways to reduce the environmental impact of a retail display programme is to extend the usable life of the structural components. This is an engineering and design consideration, not a materials question.

Where the approved design allows, replaceable graphics, removable product inserts or modular components can help extend the usable life of the main display structure across product updates, campaign changes or SKU revisions -- without replacing the entire unit.

Replaceable Graphics

When a campaign changes, the structural display does not need to be discarded. Graphic panels, backlit inserts or printed fascias can be designed for replacement, keeping the main structure in use across multiple campaigns.

Removable Product Inserts

Product trays, risers and formed inserts can be designed as removable components. When SKUs change or product dimensions are updated, only the insert is replaced -- not the display base or frame.

Modular Components

Display structures can be designed with modular sections that allow reconfiguration, addition of new elements or replacement of individual parts. This is particularly relevant for counter displays, gondola systems and multi-SKU POP units.

Reusable Structural Elements

Metal frames, base structures and primary support components can be designed for reuse across multiple display generations. Where standardised fixings and dimensions are used, structural elements can be refurbished and redeployed.

This Requires Early Planning

Designing for replaceability or modularity affects the engineering approach from the outset. It is not something that can be easily added after a design is finalised. If extended display life or updateable components are a priority for your project, please specify this in the brief.

05

Reducing Packaging Without Compromising Protection

The goal is not simply to use less packaging. It is to avoid unnecessary packaging while still protecting the finished display adequately for transport.

A display damaged in transit and requiring replacement production represents a far greater environmental cost than additional protective packaging. Packaging decisions are made with both protection performance and material efficiency in mind.

Packaging is considered as part of the engineering review, not as a final step. Where knock-down or flat-pack structures are feasible, this can significantly reduce packing volume, shipping weight and associated transport impact.

Right-Sized Cartons

Carton dimensions are specified to fit the display components without excessive void space. Unnecessary filler material is avoided where structural protection allows.

Knock-Down & Flat-Pack Structure

Where the display design permits, knock-down assembly reduces packing volume and shipping weight. This is assessed during the engineering review and incorporated where feasible without compromising structural integrity.

Component Nesting Optimization

Multiple components are nested within shared cartons where dimensions and fragility allow. This reduces total carton count and packing material per unit.

Paper-Based & Recyclable Packing Materials

Paper honeycomb, pulp moulded trays and corrugated inserts are available as alternatives to expanded foam where protection requirements are met. Recyclable outer carton materials are used as standard.

ISTA-Referenced Packing Engineering

Packing designs are referenced against ISTA drop and vibration test protocols to confirm adequate protection before shipping. This reduces damage rates and the associated waste of replacement production.

06

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you hold FSC certification?
FSC-certified wood and paper materials are available through qualified suppliers in our network. Chain-of-custody documentation can be provided for applicable components. Samtop Display does not hold FSC certification directly -- FSC documentation is provided through the certified suppliers involved in your specific project. Please confirm FSC requirements at the brief stage.
Can you provide recycled-content materials?
Recycled-content options are available for certain materials including metal and selected plastics. Recycled-content acrylic may be available depending on specification and supplier -- this must be confirmed at the project brief stage as availability varies. We will confirm supplier capability and available documentation before committing to recycled-content claims.
Can you support a factory audit?
Yes. Samtop Display holds SA8000 certification. Selected manufacturing partners can support SMETA audits and brand-specific factory assessments. We have experience with audit programmes from brands including Swatch Group and Tiffany. Please advise your audit requirements at the project brief stage so we can confirm which facilities are applicable and their current audit status.
Do you use water-based paints?
Water-based paint and low-VOC coating options are available for applicable surface treatments. The suitability of water-based finishes depends on the substrate, required finish quality, colour specification and performance requirements. We will advise on available options and any trade-offs during the engineering review.
Can displays be designed for campaign updates without full replacement?
Yes -- this is one of the most practical sustainability measures for retail display programmes. Replaceable graphic panels, removable product inserts and modular components can all extend the usable life of the main structural display. This needs to be specified in the project brief as it affects the engineering approach from the start. It cannot be easily retrofitted to a completed design.
Can you reduce packaging for our project?
We can review packaging to eliminate unnecessary material while maintaining adequate protection for transport. Options include right-sized cartons, component nesting, knock-down structure, paper-based protection alternatives and recyclable materials. However, protection adequacy is non-negotiable -- a damaged display requiring replacement production has a significantly higher environmental cost than additional packing material. If you have specific packaging requirements or restrictions, please include them in your brief.
